چکیده

The cases of AFI with no detectable sphingolipid abnormality have been placed by Zeman and Dyken 3 1 , and Zeman et al. 3 0 under the generic heading of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (NCF). The common denominator in these patitnts is the accumulation of lipofuscinlike autofluorescent substances in neurons, glial and mesodermal cells of the central nrevous system and, to a variable extent, also in peripheral nerves, muscle, skin and viscera. Although the clinical picture is multiform in the NCL, three variants can now be recognized4:

Optical Coherence Tomography in Juvenile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis

PURPOSE To report optical coherence tomography findings obtained in two patients with juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. METHODS Two case reports. RESULTS Two 7-year-old girls presented with decreased visual acuity, clumsiness, night blindness, and behavioral problems. Optical coherence tomography showed an overall reduction in thickness of the central retina, as well as the outer and...

Feasibility of gene therapy for late neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

Late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis is a progressive childhood neurodegenerative disorder characterized by intracellular accumulation of autofluorescent material resembling lipofuscin in neuronal cells. This report summarizes the new therapies under consideration for late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, with a focus on strategies for in vivo gene therapy for the retinal and ...

Electroretinograms in English setters with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

Full-field electroretinograms (ERGs) were recorded from three adult English setters with advanced neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis and three normal controls. Affected setters showed 30% to 40% reductions in a-wave and b-wave amplitudes, normal cone and rod b-wave implicit times, and slightly elevated a-wave and b-wave thresholds. The ERGs of these affected setters differed from those that have be...

Immune cells perturb axons and impair neuronal survival in a mouse model of infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses are fatal neurodegenerative disorders in which the visual system is affected early in disease progression. A typical accompanying feature is neuroinflammation, the pathogenic impact of which is presently obscure. Here we investigated the role of inflammatory cells in palmitoyl protein thioesterase 1-deficient (Ppt1(-/-)) mice, a model of infantile neuronal cer...

Electroencephalography in autosomal dominant adult neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

OBJECTIVE To describe the findings in 59 EEGs from six patients from three generations in a family with autosomal dominant adult neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (Parry disease), autopsy proven, with a follow up of 9-21 years. METHODS Descriptive, visual EEG analysis. RESULTS In these patients with epilepsy, myoclonus, dementia and Parkinsonism, EEGs were all severely abnormal, with generaliz...
